Dr. Barry Keehn is a Japan and Asia specialist, management consultant, clinical psychologist, editor and author with over 20 years experience working with Japanese corporations, the Japanese government, universities, and Americans and Europeans with commercial and professional interests in Japan.
In his early 20s Dr. Keehn was the Marketing Director in Tokyo for Walter Lance Productions, an American producer of animated shorts. Later he was the Fuji Bank Lecturer on Japanese Politics at Cambridge University, and is a past president of the Japan America Society (Los Angeles). He has been on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, the Center for Asian Business and Loyola Marymount University, and a member of the JETRO Los Angeles Executive Committee. He has been the recipient of two Fulbrights for research on Japan.
Dr. Keehn has done trainings, briefings and programs on Japan for, among others, Lucas Aerospace, IBM Europe, the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth Secretariat, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Ministry of Defense (United Kingdom), Sanwa Bank, the Institute for European and International Studies, BBC Radio and Television, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Boeing, CNN, KPFK, KCOP, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Government of Japan), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Central Japan Economic Federation, Pacific Council on Foreign Relations, the University of Southern California, and the Pacific Basin Institute. ??
Dr. Keehn’s writings on Japan have appeared in such venues as the Harvard Business Review, Foreign Affairs, the National Interest, the Japan Policy Research Institute, the Brookings Institute, the Encyclopedia Britannica and This Is Yomiuri.
Dr. Keehn is based in Los Angeles. He received his B.A. in Asian Languages from the University of California at Berkeley, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science, also from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the American Behavioral Studies Institute. Dr. Keehn also teaches graduate school seminars whenever the opportunity arises. He is currently conducting one on Clinical Diagnosis for the American Behavioral Studies Institute, and another on Japan in Film for Mount Saint Mary’s College. He recently initiated a relationship with the Lifespan Learning Institute, affiliated with UCLA, to expand their online educational offerings, and he works for CBS and MTV as a reality television clinical consultant.
